A New Home In A Familiar Place

Understanding the offer to move the Oconee County Library to Wire Park

Reviving History. Embracing The Future.

Wire Park is the creative reimagination of what was an economic anchor of Watkinsville for more than 50 years. It aims to revitalize this great corridor through the redevelopment of the Southwire industrial park, transforming it into a vibrant mixed-use development that better serves and supports the community.

The design of the site is the result of a two-day collaborative session hosted by Gibbs Capital and attended by Watkinsville citizens, local stakeholders and community leaders. Wire Park will renovate the former wire manufacturing building and give it new life, offering residential, retail and office uses, while conserving greenspace and creating common areas open to the community.

Wire Park has extended an offer for the Oconee County Library to purchase 25,000 square feet of space in the heart of the development, enabling it to serve as a civic anchor for a key project in the community.

A Community Asset For Learning And Growth.

  • Wire Park is a projected $60 million “development of regional impact”

  • The library, which currently is located in a 17,000 square foot facility, would move into an

existing 25,000 square foot building in the heart of Wire Park

  • This “purchase and renovate” proposal could include significant cost savings as

    compared to ground-up new construction

  • Wire Park would provide utilities, parking, stormwater management and landscaping

  • Ongoing maintenance needs would be subsidized by Wire Park’s commercial and

    residential owners

    A Setting Inspired By Imagination.

  • Preservation of greenspace integrates nature with the project’s design

  • Ample indoor and outdoor spaces allow for innovative ways to engage visitors

  • Allows for easy, safe bike and pedestrian access for the hundreds of nearby homes

  • Connects with existing sidewalks and future rail trail to facilitate walkable communities

  • Offers more than 400 parking spaces and easy access from Norton Road and Barnett

    Shoals Road

  • Enhanced connectivity can lead to an increased use of the library, fostering the Athens

    Regional Library System’s I.C.R.E.W. Values
